Rebuilding the internet & owning your identity! Panel on Nostr @ Cornell Bitcoin Club
Hi All,
Happy Tuesday!
Tomorrow at 6 pm in Gates G01, we will be having a panel on Nostr with 3 panelists, representing different Nostr "clients," Primal, Damus, and Ditto.
This summer, I attended the 3rd Nostr conference "Nostriga." The whole time I couldn't wait to get back to school to share it with you all, so I'm really excited for tomorrow! (This is the YouTube channel with all the conference panels.)
You might be thinking: 1) What is Nostr? 2) What does Nostr have to do with Bitcoin? 3) Why should I care?
Last week in Brazil, I heard a really great acronym: BLEND. Bitcoin, Lightning, Ecash, Nostr, and Decentralized Tech. This stack of open-source protocols will together revolutionize humanity. So far this semester, we've talked about Bitcoin and Lightning, some of you received Ecash during Club Fest, and "Decentralized Tech" is a catch-all.
Nostr stands for “Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays" and like Bitcoin is an open-source protocol. While Bitcoin decentralizes money, Nostr decentralizes information/ the internet, protecting against censorship.
As with bitcoin, you own your money and can take it with you anywhere, with Nostr, you own your identity and take it with you on any platform that you sign into. On Nostr, you can also pay people (through Zaps) small amounts of money (bitcoin) for content you appreciate (value for value). Here's an overview/walkthrough video I recorded for you all!
Nostr allows for decentralized broadcasting and discovery. While its first "app" is currently social media/ networking, ultimately it offers "decentralized search" (h/t Obi Nwosu). As such, what lies ahead is rebuilding the entire internet/ every app on Nostr.
