Cornell Bitcoin Club Meeting #12 Follow-Up & #13 Info

Hi All,

Hope you've had a nice weekend! Here are the slides v.2 & recording from the twelfth meeting.

Apologies for the length of this email; I promise there is important information! (One of these days I'll learn how to write shorter emails.)

See you Wednesday 09/25 at 6:00 pm in Gates G01! We will be having a Guest Speaker, Nate, from Voltage. Nate is going to be talking about the Lightning network, and we are going to be onboarding the Club as a literal node in the Bitcoin network, so we will technically appear in the image below :)

Here's our meeting from last semester on the Lightning network, which is only for Cornell Bitcoin Club Members.

Meeting #12 Recap

Main Topic: The Price of Today: Why You Should Care About Bitcoin
Initially, I made this slide deck --> slides v.1 (w/ added speaker notes). However, I realized that the message needed to instead be more aboutyou and why bitcoin matters for your life.

Having financial security allows you to operate from an "abundance" rather than a "scarcity" mindset, allowing you more ability to live a life aligned with your values/ a life that is sound/ of integrity to yourself and others. When you have savings, you have the ability to selectively choose.

Here's a summary of the main points:
A “Bitcoiner,” Jack Mallers, often describes how money is our time and energy (captured) in an abstracted form (because you trade your time and energy for money). In more ways than you might think, the quality of our reality degrades when the quality of our money degrades. Building on Jack Mallers' analogy, your quality and the value you add to this world cannot and should not be debased when our money debases. Bitcoin is about protecting your human existence and your ability to live your life with integrity. Bitcoin is a tool to protect and preserve you and your participation in the future. You all wake up each day for some reason. You have a “why?” Bitcoin is a tool to allow you to pursue your “why.”

You’re all here at Cornell right now because you set yourself up to succeed. You have the opportunities you have today because of your past actions. The price of not learning how to take care of yourself today is a more expensive tomorrow. Our world needs you and your contributions, so my hope is that you take care of yourself and set yourself up for further success. You have purpose and your purpose matters. And, I hope that you start to see bitcoin as a tool to protect you and your tomorrows, today.

On that note, in the club, we’re here to be more conscious and curious of the reality around us. We’re here to gain new understandings about the world, to have conversations about these ideas, and to be active participants in shaping a more sound future.

On the topic of respecting time and energy, here is the document describing the Club's new membership group system mentioned (HODLers, Nodes, Miners).
